The Story of the Camera and the Call
The English hymn writer William Cowper in 1773 wrote these lines in a hymn “God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to Perform”.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Isaiah 55:8-9
Trying to discern the voice of God is often complicated by our enquiring minds.
Many years ago, 60 years in fact, I was studying theology at the Commonwealth Bible College in Brisbane Australia.
The class of 1960 was filled with hopeful young people who loved God and wanted to serve Him full-time in ministry.
During the three years we resided together we learned to respect and appreciate each other and often wondered what God had in store for us.
Discerning the voice of God became a preoccupation with some of us as we wrestled with the question of how does God speaks to us?
The Word of God was the obvious answer but beyond that was the still small voice of the Holy Spirit to our hearts.
Many experts on prayer advise us that when we pray, we should enter into a time of quiet contemplation where we do nothing but listen for the still small voice of God speaking to us.
So let me tell you a story relating to this which had far reaching results.
It was in my last year of studies when I received the ‘Call of God’ to be a missionary.
It was a common joke amongst the students that to be a missionary all one needed was a Camera and a theory.
One day while lying on my dormitory bed one afternoon I noticed one of my classmates playing with his Camera gear.
I was always out for a bit of fun so I went over to Louis Corino and asked him what he was doing?
He replied nonchalantly “nothing really”!
I teasingly said “Louis this Agfa Camera of your has become a bit of an idol”, and I said “God is speaking to you about it”!
The next day I noticed Louis was playing with his Camera again, so to break my boredom I went over again and continued the conversation of the day before.
I said in a pseudo spiritual accent and in jest, “Louis my dear brother God has been speaking to you again and wants you to give your Camera to me”.
He listened in stunned silence!
He never said a word to which I indicated I was only joking!
Little did I know that the Lord was indeed convicting him of that very thought.
The next day I found Louis’ camera and all the camera accessories lying on my dormitory bed.
I was ‘gob smacked’ and more than a little embarrassed and quickly tried to return it to him.
He refused to accept my apology and then told me his side of the story.
Last week I caught up with him at the Gold Coast and took this video.
Louis like myself look back over a lifetime of listening to the voice of God and trying to obey His instructions.
At the time this exchange took place, which was back in 1960, I had no idea how it would effect my life and ministry.
You see the Lord knows the end from the beginning.
What started as a joke became a ministry.
All because one person (Louis Corino) was sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit.
Taking amateur photographs of family and friends has been a hobby of mine for years.
I love creating videos & pics for others to get enjoyment out of.
Since retiring from full-time ministry, I have had the time to share my experiences on social media which has given me much joy.
I have taken thousands of pics over the years and my videos on Youtube now number 948.

I can now playfully say I have a bigger congregation than most, with over 2600 subscribers (members) and to-date 1,229,076 views.
Haha, that may not be many by celebrity standards on Youtube but its proving to be an unexpected blessing to people and besides no offerings are taken! lol
